WEEKEND CUP TIES UPDATE
Our under 14 premier team (pictured above) visited Malaga FC at the weekend and played two games against Malaga Academy teams winning both 2-1 and 4.1.
Our under 15 premier team were straight into SFAI Cup action on Saturday following their trip to Malaga FC last week when they faced Kilkenny side Evergreen FC in the last 16 of the National under 15 Cup at Shanowen Road. Evergreen are well known to us over the years and they provided a stern test in what turned out to be a very close close game.
In their first real attack Evergreen took the lead when a shot from distance deceived the home goalkeeper. It took a while for the home side to get into the game and they were given a lifeline when the Evergreen goalkeeper fumbled a harmless looking shot from Rory Kane which slipped from his grasp and over the line. The Evergreen goalkeeper went on to redeem himself throughout the game making some excellent saves to keep his team in contention.
Earlston Nyantakyi made it 2-1 from close range in the second half and that looked to have been enough to win the game as they were the dominant side for most of the game and had two fairly clear calls for penalties ruled out but Evergreen came back with two minutes of normal time to go to send the game into extra time.
The first minute of extra time produced the best goal of the game when Alex O’Reilly finished off a three man move to make it 3-2 and they saw the remaining time out to move into the quarter finals.
In the only other cup game played on Saturday in the DDSL Ryan Cup our 12 Major advanced with a 3-2 win against FC Eagles.
Two of our teams played in the last 16 of the SFAI Trophy.
Kill Celtic provided the opposition for our under 12.2 team in the under 12 SFAI Trophy competition at Shanowen Road and while the early exchanges were close enough the second half was dominated by the home side who scored some excellent goals in a 7-2 win.
Bay Rovers made the long journey from West Cork to play our under 16 premier in the SFAI Trophy at St.Aidans but proved no match to the home side who ran out comfortable winners on a 6-0 scoreline.
Our under 19’s played a league play-off game against Crumlin United but with a depleted squad went down 5-1.. This tie was originally played last Sunday but the game was called to a halt prematurely after 70 minutes owing to a serious clash of heads injury to a player from each side with the home side ahead 2-0.
