ANTO BROWNE RIP

We are saddened to hear of the passing yesterday in St John’s Hospice in London of Anto Browne brother of our under 11 manager Patsy and a member of the well known Browne family from Larkhill who have had ties with St Kevin’s Football Club since the 1960’s.

Anto will be sadly missed by his son James, twin sister Jacinta, brothers Patsy, Jimmy, Arthur, John and Brendan, nephews and nieces along with his best friend of many years Noel who had been a constant companion to him through his illness.

Anto’s cremation will take place in London in the coming weeks.

May he rest in peace.

SFAI SEMI-FINALS UPDATE

The semi finals of the SFAI Cup and Trophy competitions sees three of our teams in action today.

In the under 15 Cup our under 15’s faced an early start towards the  Limerick / Kerry border to play Abbeyfeale United.

It turned out to be a typically tough cup semi-final tie that was only decided in the last ten minutes through goals from Cole Dillon and Martin Gomez to overcome the home sides resistance.

Templeogue United defeated Aisling Annacotty FC in the other semi-final.

In the SFAI Trophy our under 13’s were at home to Cork side Ringmahon Rangers and two goals in the first eight minutes from Alfie Dunne and Jamie Costigan from the penalty spot had them on the front foot and they eventually won 5-0 with second half goals from Jack Moore (2) and Mason O’Dowd.

Ashbourne United will be their final opponents.

The under 16’s made the journey to Carrick-on-Suir on the border of Tipperary and Waterford to play Carrick United in a game that turned out to be contentious and controversial – a right battle.

Mark Tierney’s team were three goals up through Jimmy Cassidy (2) and Tomas Stokas before controversary arose when Carrick United pulled a goal back and a player from each side was dismissed.

A chaotic final fifteen minutes saw the score cut to 3-2 and with 13 minutes additional time added on at the end this led to angry scenes at the finish but 3-2 it stayed and a place in the final secured.

The SKFC bus had windows broken and some parents cars were damaged which was not what one likes to witness at a schoolboy football game.

ST. KEVIN’S TEAMS REACH DDSL CUP FINALS

A cracking volleyed goal from outside the box from Ryan Cullen was the deciding factor in our under 14 Sunday 1 sides win away to Ballyoulster United in the semi-final of the DDSL O’Neills Cup and making them the fifth SKFC team to book their place at the DDSL Cup finals weekend in four weeks time.

The Graham Mooney and Mark Somers managed under 13.6 team became the fourth team from the club to reach a final this season when they came away from Malahide Castle with a 2-1 win against Malahide United in the semi-final of the DDSL Matty Langan Cup with Trevon Akahomen and Preston Powell getting the all important goals.

The honour of being the first SKFC to qualify for a DDSL Cup final this season falls to our under 12 major team who came from behind to beat Newbridge Town 4-2 after extra time in the semi final of the DDSL Tony Ryan Cup on Saturday at St. Aidan’s – the goals coming from Charlie Dunne David Marinskas Keane Reilly and Alex Smyth.

Cherry Orchard or Cambridge will be their final opponents.

Our under 15 premier team kept their season moving along nicely with an emphatic 3-0 win against Shelbourne FC in the semi final of the DDSL Under 15 Menton Cup with a first half goal from Matthew Awolowo and two late in the second half from Martin Gomez.  Belvedere fc will be their final opponents while next week they travel to Abbeyfeale United in the semi final of the SFAI Cup and are well placed in the DDSL premier league.

Out in Malahide on Saturday our under 14 premier team produced a solid team performance to reach the final of the oldest DDSL Cup competition – The Thunder Cup – when beating a strong Malahide United side 2-0 with goals from Tyler Fitzpatrick and Ryan Donovan and to also gain compensation for the defeat to Malahide in the last 16 of the SFAI Cup last month. Belvedere FC or St Josephs AFC will be their opposition in the final.

Congratulations to those five squads and their management groups in getting to their respective finals and hopefully they will be joined by other SKFC teams in the coming weeks for the finals on the May bank holiday weekend.

SENIOR CUP SEMI-FINAL DRAW

On Friday night a 3-2 win in the quarter final Leinster Senior League Lummy O’Reilly Cup saw our senior team turn the table on Dublin Bus FC who defeated them in the final of the same competition last season.

Sean Phillips was the main man with a hat trick to secure a semi-final spot which will be played on Wednesday April 16th.

The draw for the semi-final sees them drawn away to Trinity-Donaghamede later this month.

WEEKEND CUP TIES UPDATE

Our under 14 premier team  (pictured above) visited Malaga FC at the weekend and played two games against Malaga Academy teams winning both  2-1 and 4.1.

Our under 15 premier team were straight into SFAI Cup action on Saturday following their trip to Malaga FC last week when they faced Kilkenny side Evergreen FC in the last 16 of the National under 15 Cup at Shanowen Road. Evergreen are well known to us over the years and they provided a stern test in what turned out to be a very close close game.

In their first real attack Evergreen took the lead when a shot from distance deceived the home goalkeeper. It took a while for the home side to get into the game and they were given a lifeline when the Evergreen goalkeeper fumbled a harmless looking shot from Rory Kane which slipped from his grasp and over the line. The Evergreen goalkeeper went on to redeem himself throughout the game making some excellent saves to keep his team in contention.

Earlston Nyantakyi made it 2-1 from close range in the second half and that looked to have been enough to win the game as they were the dominant side for most of the game and had two fairly clear calls for penalties ruled out but Evergreen came back with two minutes of normal time to go to send the game into extra time.

The first minute of extra time produced the best goal of the game when Alex O’Reilly finished off a three man move to make it 3-2 and they saw the remaining time out to move into the quarter finals.

In the only other cup game played on Saturday in the DDSL Ryan Cup our 12 Major advanced with a 3-2 win against FC Eagles.

Two of our teams played in the last 16 of the SFAI Trophy.

Kill Celtic provided the opposition for our under 12.2 team in the under 12 SFAI Trophy competition at Shanowen Road and while the early exchanges were close enough the second half was dominated by the home side who scored some excellent goals in a 7-2 win.

Bay Rovers made the long journey from West Cork to play our under 16 premier in the SFAI Trophy at St.Aidans but proved no match to the home side who ran out comfortable winners  on a 6-0 scoreline.

Our under 19’s played a league play-off game against Crumlin United but with a depleted squad went down 5-1.. This tie was originally played last Sunday but the game was called to a halt prematurely after 70 minutes owing to a serious clash of heads injury to a player from each side with the home side ahead 2-0.

DDSL Cup games;

Under 11.9 League Cup v Terenure Rangers away Bushy Park lost on pens after 4-4 draw.

Under 12.5 Jean Kennedy Cup v Firhouse-Carmel home Ward Cross lost 4-2.

Under 13.5 Langan Cup v Phoenix FC away Scribblestown lost 5-2.

Under 13.6 Langan Cup home v Terenure Rangers Ellenfield won 2-1.

Under 14 girls Higgins Cup home v Newbridge Town Ellenfield lost 4-1

Under 18 Ferrari Cup v Portmarnock AFC Paddys Hill lost 2-1.

Two of our teams are in Spain this weekend – the under 14 premier team are visiting Malaga FC – the same as our 15s last week and they won their first game against Malaga Academy 2-1.

While the under 13 premier teams progress in the Carnaval Cup tournament in Barcelona is reported in a separate post.

CARNAVAL CUP UPDATE

The Carnaval Cup tournament in Barcelona kicked off  on Friday morning with our under 13 premier team involved.

A 4-0 loss to top Belgian side KRC Genk was followed a few hours later with a much needed 2-0 win against local Catalan side CF Parets with Jamie Costigan and Will McCann the goalscorers. Their third group game against American side C E S A ended in a 1-0 defeat.

Those results put them into the last 16 of the Silver Cup knock out phase.

They defeated FC Granollers – coming from being 1 nil down at half time to equalise through Jamie Costigan and eventually come out on top 5-4 on penalties, Jamie Costigan, Jack Moore, Callum O’Brien, Will McCann and Mason O’Dowd scoring from the spot – to move into the last 8.

TEC Academy were the last 8 opponents and in this game the team produced probably their best performance so far winning 3-1 with Jamie Costigan again on the scoresheet with two goals – one a penalty – along with Mason O’Dowd.

The Silver cup semi-final game was a bridge too far as local side FC Tarragona proved stronger in a 2-0 win.

LAST 16 SFAI CUP & TROPHY OPPONENTS

Following last 32 wins for four of our teams the draw for the last 16 of the SFAI Cup and Trophy competitions have been made with all four remaining teams drawn at home;
Under 12 SFAI Trophy v Kill Celtic (Kildare)
Under 13 SFAI Trophy v Mullingar Athletic (Westmeath)
Under 15 SFAI Cup v Evergreen FC (Kilkenny)
Under 16 SFAI Trophy v Bay Rovers (Cork)
Games provisionally fixed for March 1st / 2nd
Our u15 Premier team had an early start as they headed to Killarney for the round of 32 game against Mastergeeha FC.
After stopping off for food in Abbeyfeale, they arrived in Killarney. Words of wisdom from the management team, warm up done, the game started.
Saints were quick out of the blocks and early goals from Mason Adede and Cole Dillon had them 2-0. They could have added to the early goals, but the Mastergeeha goalkeeper made some great saves.
The saints dominated the first half and prevented any real goal attempts from the home team.
In the second half the saints continued to play as they did in the first half. A few chances went begging before goal number 3 arrived from Dan Holton. The home team scored with their first real shot on the saints goal, but any chance of a revival were soon wiped out with goals from Zach Holmes, Alex O’Reilly and two from Martin Gomez the saints ended up winning comfortably.
That made the long trip home a bit more enjoyable. They now await the last 16 draw on Thursday. (Thanks to Ger Losty for this report)
St Kevin’s teams were also involved in National cup and Trophy competitions along with DDSL cups at under 11, 12, 13, 14 & 16 over the weekend.
Leixlip United were too strong for our 11.2 Sunday in the DDSL Paul Fitzgerald Cup in Ward Cross.
The under 12 Sunday 1 moved on in the DDSL Herald Cup with a 1-0 win away in Portmarnock as did our under 12.5 who also defeated Portmarnock 4-2 in the DDSL Jean Kennedy Cup.
Our under 13 Premier side were made to work hard for their win over premier rivals Mount Merrion after a 1-1 draw after extra time they prevailed in the shoot out 5-4.
Our under 14 Premier team led 1-0 up to the final minutes of their SFAI under 14 cup game away to Malahide United but eventually lost 2-1 in extra time.
Extra time was also needed in the National Trophy game at Shanowen Road where our 14 Sunday 1 came from 2 down with ten minutes to go to draw level but the visitors Moneygall FC from Offaly prevailed in extra time to win 4-2.
Bonagee United made the long trip from Letterkenny to play in the National Trophy against our under 16 Premier team which turned out to be a very one sided affair – the home side winning 6-0.
